Digital alternatives are the 'new normal'

Mechanical engineering thrives on long-term and trusting customer relationships. Sales staff spend much of their time:

  • selecting products;
  • configuring new solutions;
  • obtaining information and updates from internal specialists.

Personal proximity and face-to-face conversations with customers form an important part of the sales process.

For this reason, tradeshows have long been considered a significant seismograph of this industry. But when the pandemic put tradeshows on pause in recent years, businesses have gone in search of new, digital alternatives.

While the pandemic appears to be mostly behind us now, businesses have experienced the benefits of these new alternatives, and they like them. So much so that they are incorporating it into the new normal.

Meeting today's demands

With its broad product portfolio and solutions, Systemair contributes to providing good indoor air quality in buildings.

The main challenges Systemair faces include:

  • responding in a timely manner to ever-changing customer requirements;
  • not being able to demonstrate the entire portfolio life on-site due to a multitude of available configurations and the sheer size of their products;
  • lack of appropriate sales tools to thrive in a digital-first environment.

It was clear that traditional tools were not sufficient to meet the demands of our time.

Interactive 3D

The most well-known form of interactive 3D is virtual reality (VR), in which the user moves in an entirely virtual environment. Augmented reality (AR) allows the user to place and experience virtual objects in their real-world environment.

Both technologies can be experienced through a multitude of devices, including smartphones, tablets, computers, and headsets.

Better than the real world

One of the main characteristics of interactive 3D lies in the immersiveness and realism of the product displayed. Users have the possibility to make real-time adjustments, simulate scenarios, and activate features like:

  • X-ray views;
  • airflow visualisations;
  • exploded views;
  • real-time data simulations.

In conclusion, interactive 3D enables companies to present and explain their products without real-world limitations.

Setting requirements

At the start of the collaboration, specific requirements on what the solution should be like were outlined and recorded in a joint kick-off meeting. It was decided that the solution should be:

Easy to use for the entire sales force and have low technological thresholds

Displayable on any end device, ideally on smartphones and tablets

Able to be operated remotely and by the customers themselves

Functional, but also offer a “wow” factor

Selecting the technology

For easy and intuitive access to the required information, Web-based AR (WebAR) technology was selected, as it does not require the installation of a native app, nor the use of expensive headsets. Anyone – from salespeople to customers – can reap the benefits of using the WebAR app.

From CAD models to 3D apps

MRstudios relies on 3D real-time rendering. This technology makes use of existing CAD data of a product to create a 3D replica, which is then placed in the app. Features such as X-ray views or airflow visualisations can be added to convey information.

The benefits

Easy and quick access for anyone, from anywhere

To share the application, Systemair simply needs to provide a web link to its employees and customers. The recipient can then launch the app by accessing this link via any mobile touchscreen device that has a camera. Since nothing more than an internet connection is needed, the WebAR application can be disseminated faster, thereby reaching more people in a short period of time.

Save costs without losing your wow factor

Product features and information can be presented in a visually memorable and interactive way, as if the actual unit was present. As such, Systemair’s sales representatives no longer have to incur high expenses to transport the often heavy and bulky solutions to events. This also cuts down on costly exhibition space.

The investment in the app has already returned after a short time. The costs for product presentations at trade fairs, roadshows, or similar are incurred with every event we attend. In contrast, an interactive 3D app only needs to be developed once and can be continuously expanded and improved thereafter.

From one app to a comprehensive technology stack

The success of the WebAR app quickly led to an expansion of the collaboration. Systemair Group currently uses several VR and AR apps – both as native apps and as web-based apps – for a variety of purposes.

The digital portfolio is now so extensive that MRstudios has developed Systemair’s very own “App Launcher”, from which all companies and employees in the Group can quickly access available apps.

Integration in more than just sales and marketing

Systemair did not invest in ‘just a gimmick’, but together with MRstudios integrated a future technology deeply into its business processes.

In addition to sales and marketing, the apps can be used across multiple departments for training, after-sales and even remote maintenance of systems.
